Bulk Importing Trades into the Journal
The best way to start using StockTickr is to bulk import your trading history into the journal.
For Think or Swim Clients
- Select Accounts Tab from within thinkDesktop.
- Select "change dates viewed" button in upper right and select data range for the export.
- Select button in far upper right corner to "Export or print this layout" as mouse-over says.
- From the dropdown menu that appears, select "Export".
- A dialog box appears to select the file type and location to save the file.
- Choose "CSV (comma-separated values)" from the File Types dialog box.
- Choose a name for the file or keep the default name.
- Click "Export" button.
- Go to the bulk import tool and choose your newly selected file to import your trades.
For TradeStation Clients
- Open TradeManager Analysis window
- Select date range
- Generate report
- In upper toolbar click on "export report" icon
- Choose a file name to save the report as.
- Bring up the file in Microsoft Excel.
- Change to the Trades List worksheet.
- Go to File, Save As and choose CSV file as the file format.
- Choose a file name and save the file, remembering which folder you saved it in.
- Go to the bulk import tool and choose your newly selected file to import your trades.
For Schwab Accounts
- On the Schwab web site, go to Accounts, then History.
- Define the date range for the transactions you'd like to export.
- Click Go to view the transactions.
- In the top right corner, click the Export link.
- Click OK when the disclaimer dialog box appears.
- Save the file to your hard drive
- Go to the Bulk Import page and select Schwab in the drop down list.
- Browse to the file you just created.
- Click Upload Now.
For MB Trading and Other Brokers that Clear Through Penson
- In the Penson page that pops up, go to Account Information, then Trade Activity.
- In the From and To fields, put the date range for the trades you'd like to export, then click Go.
- When the trade activity is returned, look on the blue bar that says "Trade Activity"
- Click on the briefcase icon with the arrow through it (right to the left of the printer icon).
- That will bring up the Export Data screen.
- Export the data in a Delimited Text File format with comma delimited selected as the delimiter.
- Download that file and go to the bulk import tool to import your trades.
For Interactive Brokers Users
- In your IB account, go to Report Management, then Activity Downloads.
- You can choose from a variety of formats - choose the TradeLog format.
- After clicking the Download button, select the entire report by going to Edit, Select All (or using the Ctrl-A shortcut key)
- Copy the contents to the clipboard by going to Edit, Copy (or using Ctrl-C).
- Create a new text file on your computer and paste the contents into the new file.
- Go to the bulk import tool and choose your newly selected file to import your trades.
Create Your Own CSV File
If you already have your executions in a database of some kind, you can create a CSV file that can be imported.
Here are two sample files in the proper format:
- Generic CSV format for stock transactions
- Generic CSV format for non-stock transactions (futures and options)
When you bulk import, choose the Generic CSV option for the file format.
For Terra Nova Clients
- On the Terra Nova web site, log in and go to Client Services and then go to the Reports tab.
- Select Download Data.
- Choose a Start and End date for the download.
- Select Comma Delimited File (CSV) - Standard option for the file format.
- Click the Download button and save the file in on your computer in a place you'll remember.
- Go to the bulk import tool to import your trades, choosing Terra Nova as the file format.
For StreetSmart Pro Users
Note: StreetSmart Pro users can use this method to import trades from the most recent trading day only. To import more of your trading history, follow the instructions for Schwab Accounts below.
- From within StreetSmart Pro, go to the Account Detail window.
- Select the Order Status tab.
- From the File menu inside the Account Detail window, select Export. This will create a file with your execution data in it.
- Choose a file name and location that you'll remember and click Save.
- Go to the bulk import tool, select StreetSmart Pro, and choose your newly selected file to import your trades.
